CAVEAT RESEARCHOR: OK, so you’ve heard it a hundred times, but I must reveal it as a German genealogy research pre-requisite: Exhaust all home & family sources prior to doing online or onsite genealogical research.
Usually in German-American research–even if you are aware of the precise name of the parish of origin in the Old World–it is generally wise to exhaust the various interesting & informative USA county, state & federal records & immigration resources.
Also, there’s usually not much sense in “jumping across the pond” to Germany to do your German genealogy research in any country of Europe that had Germans–until you’ve ascertained the name of the parish of origin! Yes, that is much easier said than done, of course.
Two decades ago, I wrote an article for the Genealogy Helper Magazine. Thesis: by doing comprehensive USA, immigration and German ancestral & genealogical research, aka Deutsche Ahnenforschung, you’ll be so much more pleased with what you have for the data, documentation & image presentation of the family’s history! You’ll also more than likely be much more prepared to get into the thick of Germanic research in the Old Country.

In January 2008, in Kassel, Hessen, Germany, my sweet mother was struggling with the ravages & vestiges of kidney cancer & was on her near-deathbed. Lynell & I opted nonetheless to take a short visit to our client’s target ancestral village (Schlieben, Sachsen) in order to outright exhaust the parish registers of all ancestral family members’ birth, marriage & death entries. We took digital photographs of each pertinent ancestral family member’s entry.
The Grants Pass, Oregon client, Betty Barry, & her Roseburg, Oregon sister were elated that they were able to get all this digitally-documented research for about the price of just one round-trip ticket from Salt Lake City to Frankfurt, Germany!
No, we don’t get the marriages of every sibling–just the target ancestral sibling.
However, we do get each of their births, for the family history research is not only more complete, but the birth record of a child is often the source of ascertaining the parish of origin of the mother, that is, if from a different place.
We returned in time to help escort Mom over to the Other Side. Apparently, her mother & also beloved half-sister, Irmgard Boll Muessler were there on the Other Side to greet her. Mom, in her final minute of life, markedly energized, tried in vain to pull herself out of bed and called out “Mama!” and “Irmel!”
It is interestingly supportive to note that Mom had not mentioned Irmel’s name in several months. Although this event frightened my adult “little” sister, Lynell & I knew and taught my sister what had happened. She might now have a seed of faith.

“Germany,” per se, is a long story not suited to be totally explained here! Suffice it to say that “Germany” did not really exist as a bona fide British or American term for the modern country of that name until after WW1.
There were Germans all over Europe, to include the former Czechoslovakia, Denmark, England, France, Hungary, Poland, Romania & Russia.
Prussia or Preussen extended as far east as Russia (province: a part of East Prussia or Ostpreussen)!
“Germany” also once (generally pre-WW1) had portions of land in Bohemia (Boehmen; Czech Republic; Cechy); Moravia (Maehren or Moravske); Denmark (Daenemark or Danmark or Oldenburg); Alsace-Lorraine (in modern-day France; known to Germans as Elsass-Lothringen); Poland (provinces: Posen {Poznan}, East Prussia {Ostpreussen} & West Prussia).
One client said, “Karl, different censuses claim my ancestor was born in Alsace, Elsass, France, Germany & Prussia. Which one is it?” NEWSFLASH: Depending on what language & time-period you are considering, each one of those names is correct for that target ancestor!
