Poland & Ukraine cases cracked by our Poland Genealogist

Marta Lustgarten has served as the on-site, in Poland archival researcher for www.GermanGenealogist.com. These include Germans in addition to Poles.

For several of our cases, Marta has gone above & beyond to have helped us to crack cases for clients who have been trying for decades!

Marta found specific Tscheschen-Glashütte parish register entries that were misfiled & therefore, missing from, i.e. NOT on the available microfilm at the Family History Library of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Salt Lake City, Utah.

This crucial finding enabled us/her to continue the research & locate numerous additional ancestral family members of more than one surname: JANETZKI, KRAUSE, MATZUGA, et al.!

With her specific Poland geo-knowledge, Marta also deciphered a USA passenger listing that showed a town that was barely legible & ascertained a precise place of origin for the Spilizewski lineage in the Ukraine. We confirmed the finding by virtue of a known nearby town–Kowel! This got us away from digging at the wrong roots in Kowal, Poland.

She will now also be working a Czarne, Poland case for us. We tried the available Catholic records for one of the Czarnes. As usual, working with us, we are confident that Marta will help us narrow down to the correct one, probably in a Evangelical Lutheran parish.

Lynell & I are very grateful for her able assistance to us & our clients. We easily pay her via PayPal.” November 26, 2011

“”I found Karl-Michael from his German Genealogist website and a link from another website. Karl-Michael took my Ukrainian case even though he warned me it wasn’t his area of expertise. His knowledge of how to find relatives coupled with his tenacious attitude that our relatives want to be found helped him uncover a 4 generation mystery- just in time for Christmas!”” December 21, 2011

Genealogical successes:

We have managed to break the brick wall in the ancestry research for the client. The place in question was the trading city of Kanev, Ukraine, and we managed to locate the extended family of reportedly Greek heritage in the 1865 household records, including the direct ancestor.

We will hopefully be able to get 4-6 more generations of the same family in the due course…

“With the birth of our first child, my wife and I were seeking a genealogist to assist in our German heritage. As an executive at a large bank, I have not had the time to explore this on my own (as well as knew there was no way I had the knowledge or experience to get very far without professional assistance). Karl and his wife, Lynell, have been fantastic. While still a work in progress (which can probably be said about most things in this world) the results so far have been great – they have assisted in going back to the ancestral villages in southern Germany for what is already more than 9 generations of family (he even found a number of lost relatives that we are now in touch with!). His skill with the language and ability to make sense of many of these historical German documents has been key in getting to where he has – a process we know we would never be able to do ourselves. I look forward to continuing to work with him in this endeavor. Joe” December 18, 2011

Continuous volunteer German Genealogy efforts for patrons by GermanGenealogist.com

‎”Karl-Michael Sala! Help me find my ancestors–before I become one!” –a young client.

A 2-hour focused volunteer effort at the Mesa, Arizona Regional Family History Center by an LDS convert today helped a patron–also an LDS convert–crack a German case he had been working for decades!

From an 1880 Census, all the patron, Richard Malchow of Meeker, Colorado, knew was “Mecklenburg.”

Karl-Michael Sala was working for another client, but overheard some buzz about “can’t find” and “German”–keywords that make Karl’s ears get very pointy{:>)

Long & detailed story short: Within one hour: Karl found W[ilhel]m Malchow on the NY Passenger List (USA Immigration), ascertained the SS Hammonia had sailed out of Hamburg.

Found the same departing ship also in the Hamburg Passenger List (Germany Emigration) Direct Index for 1872; went to the actual digital image of the HPL & there was given the name of the place of origin: Wardow, indeed in Mecklenburg!

Then using a Mecklenburg German gazetteer, it gives the Evangelical Lutheran parish: Laage!

FamilySearch verified that there are 3 microfilms to order, which include the requisite 1848 possible year of birth for the target ancestor: Wilhelm Malchow!

Karl is meeting with Brother Malchow tomorrow @ 9 am to continue the process! Wish us well!? http://www.germangenealogist.com/?page_id=2See More

Old German handwriting (alte deutsche Handschrift) is found in numerous countries of Europe!

[1:32:58 AM] Karl-Michael Sala posted to the FamilySearch’s Genealogy Research Community’s (on Facebook) Skype page:

Is there really NObody else who can decipher the old German handwriting?  If not, then we need to recruit some additional German Handschrift-capable admins. Jens has referred others to us, esp. when the words were German vis-a-vis Danish.

You see, as many of you know, many areas of Europe, southward from the Czech Republic, northward to Denmark, back over to France & across to Poland, Lithuania & Russia, were administered & ruled by Germans.

I’ve now cracked 10+ cases in Poland–& that’s just since June 2011 !  These are often cases that patrons have been “dinking with” for decades.  Time is short. It is time to cease “dinking” & get to the “cracking.” {:>) A case cannot be cracked if the name of the location cannot be ascertained or deciphered from phonetic & hand-written variants.  –Karl-Michael Sala, German Genealogist since 1979; now aka www.GermanGenealogist.com (I do a heckuva lot more than German)
